Ashton Playing Fields Smurf turf for new hockey facility

down

Velocity Sports Ltd have recently upgraded the 25-year-old sand filled Astro turf at Ashton Playing Fields near Woodford Green in Essex.

The project involved the design and re-construction of an existing sand filled artificial grass hockey pitch that had fallen into a state of disrepair.

The pitch had fallen way outside of the parameters required by the FIH for competitive hockey and despite some valuable infrastructure being in place, the pitch had become completely redundant.

The existing field and underlying rubber crumb shockpad were stripped and sent away for recycling, new land drainage was installed into the existing stone base which was topped up with additional aggregate and overlaid with a porous macadam layer to create a fully engineered base.

"I'm really proud of the latest investment we've made to improving leisure facilities in Ilford North. It's the first time the pitch at Ashton has been updated since 1986, so this was long overdue. It’s great to see the pitch in such good condition and this super facility will enable use throughout the year."

This new base was then surfaced with a 15mm wet pour rubber crumb shockpad and blue 18mm pile texturised monofilament sand dressed artificial hockey surface.

The scheme also involved the installation of a new 3 and 4.5m high twinbar super rebound perimeter fencing system and equipment assembly.

The improvements were funded by Redbridge Council and Vision, with the generous support of the London Marathon Charitable Trust.
